So Here is

THE CHALLENGE

You think you can do better?  Give it a try, and I’ll post it here.  Here's the rules:

  1. Everything in your story or post should work in a universe where Science, Scriptures, and Sci-Fi are all true. (If you are unclear what I mean by this, checkout Blog Post #210).

  2. Watch the language, sex and violence.  This is a family-friendly site.

  3. Include a name or pseudonym if you want to retain rights to your submittal.

  4. Include an email if you want to know why you might not see it posted.

I am an Engineer, Scout Master, Judoka, Elder and a few other things (like Father, Husband, US Citizen, etc.).  I may be an author.  I never claimed to be a writer.  I’ve read how Edgar Allan Poe crafted The Raven.  Very impressive, and I will never be at that level.  So if you've got some idea, have had it!

Every author has to decide what his ‘universe’ is like.  Do laser swords work or magic wands?  Well I decided that mine is This One.  With one caveat: I believe in Einstein, Darwin – and God.  I’ve talked to God, and He has answered me.  Not in any earth shaking experience, just the still small voice like Elijah heard in 1 Kings 19.

I know this is a big put off for those steeped in science because I was one.  I had three TVs tuned to different stations when Armstrong stepped onto the moon.

But consider this.  When the angel Moroni appeared to the prophet Joseph Smith in his bedroom, he recorded “After this communication … instantly I saw, as it were, a conduit open right up into heaven, and he ascended till he entirely disappeared, and the room was left as it had been before this heavenly light had made its appearance.” (Joseph Smith's Testimony)  With no hole in the ceiling.

This is an almost perfect description of multi-dimensional travel, by a young man in the 1800’s that almost certainly had never heard of such a thing.

Is it not at least possible that Science and the Scriptures are both right?  Newton said what goes up must come down.  Then we learned, that while that was true, if it were shaped right, it didn’t have to come down right away.  In fact if went up fast enough, it didn’t have to come down at all.

Doesn’t mean that Newton was wrong.  He just had an incomplete understanding of the whole situation.  Einstein said you cannot travel faster than light in a vacuum.  But what if you go around the vacuum, instead of through it?

As Arthur C. Clarke said “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”  I think They are out there, and are indistinguishable from Gods.

I also believe there is more to this world than is accepted by the trained scientific eye.  For instance, I remember reading an article in Reader’s Digest that made a convincing case for the use of Far-Seeing during the Cold War by the CIA.  Just because we don’t understand it and can’t control it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.  Birds could fly long before we understood how (and we’re still trying to wrap our heads around how the bumble bee does it).

Much that was once disdained, then, as ‘fringe science’, is now smack in the middle of main stream.  Take the guy that thought doctors were carrying something with them from the pathology lab when going directly to the operating theater.  And for some unknown reason their patients were dying.  He was right and those that phoo-phooed him were proven wrong, but it took years.  (See Sleeping Beauties in Science.)

Hence, in my universe, Science, Scriptures, and Sci-Fi are all taken as true.  With that in mind, see what you can do.
